Long trousers, skirts below the knee, long-sleeved shirts, t-shirts with sleeves (no tank tops or sleeveless). Jeans and sneakers are explicitly permitted. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. A light cardigan or jacket can serve double duty: keeping you warm in air-conditioned museums and being easy to remove if you overheat.
What is not allowed
Tank tops, sleeveless dresses, shorts, or skirts above the knee. Very low-cut or transparent clothing. The rule is shoulders and knees — cover both and you are fine. Enforcement is spotty at the Basilica entrance but strict in the Museums themselves; guards turn people away or ask them to cover up with a scarf or cardigan.
Hats and sunglasses indoors
Hats should be removed inside the Basilica (it is a place of worship). Sunglasses are also not worn indoors. Outside in St Peter’s Square you can wear both.
Photography rules
Photography is banned inside the Sistine Chapel. Cameras, phones, and any recording devices are not allowed. Inside the Vatican Museums elsewhere, photography without flash is permitted. Outside in the Basilica, photography is allowed but be respectful of worshippers.
